Using the finest Sherry seasoned European oak casks gives RAGNVALD a rich succulence with a formidable aroma of dark chocolate, candied peel and oriental spices as exotic as the destinations that the Viking pioneer reached in his longship!
The Warrior Series is a collection of single malts created exclusively for Duty Free to showcase the very best of Highland Park. Each expression both introduces a key figure from Orkney’s Viking history and demonstrates how the flavours of Highland Park are influenced by cask type.
The one indisputable fact about the Vikings is that they were by far the most accomplished travellers of their time, often sailing huge distances to discover new lands to bring home a variety of unusual goods from faraway nations. A major key to the success of these Viking raids was the iconic longship.
The most famous and pioneering of all Vikings was Earl Ragnvald of Orkney. Originally hailing from Norway, Ragnvald, nephew of Earl Magnus, was granted the title of earl in around 1129. Earl Ragnvald was a noted sailor and merchant warrior, his expeditions bringing fabrics, exotic spices and precious stones from across Europe and the Middle East.
Ragnvald completed many succussful expeditions and returned triumphantly to Orkney with his ship laden with bounty. However, the Orkney he returned to had changed dramatically and in 1158 Ragnvald and eight of his loyal men were attached and killed by warriors loyal to his rival earl, Harold. Ragnvald was buried at St. Magnus Cathedral and later canonised as Saint Ronald of Orkney. Today his heroics as an explorer have made him one of the most celebrated characters in Viking history.
